This two-part presentation will combine real experience as a first arriving company officer on large events, with current data and science, to offer fire companies tangible strategies on how to prepare for, and succeed, when faced with complicated expanding events. The presentation profiles an overwhelming event experienced as the captain of the first arriving company to a large apartment fire with people jumping from upper levels and many others in need of rescue. The initial crews performed approximately 30 VEIS entries which resulted in 8 upper-level window ladder rescues prior to transitioning to a prolonged defensive operation.
Being first due comes with similar challenges, whether you come from a single station rural department or large metro department, and the presentation is geared to all. In the words of Alan Brunacini, "most of the time on the fireground, the first 5 minutes are worth the next 5 hours".
