Appointed fire chief in March 2023, Alec Oughton leads Aurora Fire Rescue in Aurora, Colo. Aurora Fire Rescue is an all-hazards department spanning 17 fire stations and nearly 500 firefighters and paramedics who respond to approximately 57,000 calls for service each year. Accredited through the Center for Public Safety Excellence Commission on Fire Accreditation International, it is in the top 1 percent of all fire departments in the U.S. and Canada to hold a Class 1 Public Protection Classification from the Insurance Services Office.

Prior to joining Aurora Fire Rescue, Chief Oughton served as fire chief for the Henrico County, Va., Division of Fire. He joined the Division in 1999 and served as a firefighter/paramedic, company officer, station captain, emergency medical services supervisor, field battalion chief, battalion chief of special operations and EMS and Deputy Chief of Operations prior to being appointed fire chief in 2019. His fire and EMS service began in the early 1990s as a volunteer with the Virginia Tech Rescue Squad and the Manassas Park Volunteer Fire Department, followed by a staff position with Spotsylvania County, Va.

Chief Oughton holds a Master of Public Administration and bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from Liberty University, as well as associate degrees in fire science and emergency medical services from Reynolds Community College. He is a graduate of the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer program and has been awarded the Chief Fire Officer designation by the Center for Public Safety Excellence.

Chief Oughton serves on the boards of directors for the Center for Public Safety Excellence and the Metro Denver Fire Chiefs Association and is a member of the advisory board for Metropolitan State University of Denver’s Fire and Emergency Response Administration Program as well as the Public Administration Advisory Board for Marist College. His professional and community involvement also includes serving as a member of the Rotary Club of Aurora and numerous professional associations for the fire service.
